Every hour a child in the Capital becomes victim to a crime. On an average, 22 crimes against children were reported every day from Delhi in 2016, falling from 25 a day in 2015. The number, however, remained restricted more than five years ago, in 2011, to just 11 a day.

Data shows that there has been a constant rise in crimes against children in the Capital over the past six years. From 2011 to 2015, as the number of crime against children more than doubled, a slight dip was recorded in 2016. On the other hand, 2015, remains the year with the highest crime rate against children ever.

This year, children in the Capital witnessed 6,881 kidnappings, 927 rapes, and 270 cases of sexual harassment along with 60 murders and 169 cases of stalking.

As recent as Thursday, a six-year-old girl was raped by a housekeeping staff in South Delhi's school toilet. The family alleged that their daughter who studies in Class 1 of the school has been sexually assaulted by a certain Rakesh, employed with the school as a sweeper.

"Primary investigations revealed that the incident took place around 1 pm inside the school's toilet. It was the victim, who, despite being threatened by the sweeper, to keep her lips locked, narrated her ordeal to her mother, bringing the crime to light," said a senior police officer.

This is not an off case. A five-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in a Delhi government school in September this year following which the government ordered a magisterial inquiry in the case.

Before the homicide of seven-year-old Pradyumn in his school in Gurugram, in May this year, a three-year-old girl was brutally raped by her neighbour in central Delhi's Anand Parbat area after which she had to undergo emergency rgery at a hospital.

Surviving the sexual assault , the toddler was able to go back to a normal life after rigorous medication and counselling sessions. In March, a four-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by her 16-year-old neighbour.
