In order to overcome the stress and depression faced by the police control room (PCR) officials, who are the lifeline of the Delhi Police, sessions on coping with such situations on a regular basis and motivate them to speak up about it are being conducted by the Delhi Police. Two sessions have been conducted for 400 officers so far.

"The main objective of the programme is to tell the officials that we are concerned about them. Being the first responder to callers, the staff is being educated on not only providing legal help but also encourage them to face the crisis patiently until their arrival," said Devender Arya, Deputy Commissioner of Police, PCR. The working hours are erratic and because of lack of time, the problems are not shared by them and in some cases, their family is unaware too, he added.

The suicide case of a PCR official in North Delhi prompted the force to find a solution. The deceased official had gone to get the official car repaired when he went to a secluded area and shot himself. The PCR has 14 zones and 15 officers from each zone are being called to attend the sessions. The recently concluded sessions had psychiatrists from Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, who conducted a full-day workshop for the officials. Experts, as well as psychiatrists, have been roped in for the workshop. "Symptoms and causes of stress and the remedies through physical, mental, emotional and spiritual parameters are the main focuses that are being discussed in the workshop," Arya said.
