The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) launched a 'Satyagraha' demanding capital punishment for the rapist of eight-month-old baby on Wednesday. The infant was brutally raped by her 28-year-old cousin on Sunday, and he was later arrested by the Delhi police on Monday.

DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal, who visited the infant in the hospital, described her injuries as "horrific". Afterwards, she announced that she, along with her team, would not be going back home for the next one month and would work day and night in protest till their demands were met.

The women's body chief also said the eight-month-old survivor is the "child" of entire nation. "She has not been raped but the Commission has been raped, as our repeated recommendations are being ignored. We are giving 30 days to the Center and the State to get its act together on the issue of women's safety in the Capital. We will be doing Satyagraha, not going back home and working round the clock to shake up the sleeping system. In case the system fails to move even then, the Delhi Commission for Women shall launch a massive agitation in the Capital."

The Commission also wrote to the PMO and the Home Ministry and demanded they to take measures to ensure safety of women within 30 days. "I request PM to immediately pay attention to the plight of these little girls. Considering the special status of Delhi and having approached all authorities before with no result, I feel that nothing shall move until the PM of the country pays personal attention to the matter," she added.

The Commission said that it will take the Satyagraha to households across the Capital to collect one lakh signatures which will be sent to the PM. The DCW had announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 for the child's family on Tuesday .

According to doctors at Kalawati Saran Hospital, the infant is currently under observation and stable. The infant had earlier undergone a three-hour-long surgery at Lady Harding College. Sources at the hospital say she will soon be shifted to AIIMS soon.
