Delhi Police arrested a 26-year-old man on Friday for the alleged rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl. Last week, the police found the seven-year-old girl's body locked in a trunk, lying in a drain in northeast Delhi. A medical examination showed that she was raped and brutally murdered.
According to the police, it was on June 21 that the girl's parents got a kidnapping case registered at New Usmanpur police station after she became untraceable. Despite repeated attempts, the girl could not be traced.
On June 28, the dead body of a similar aged girl was recovered from a drain at 4th Pusta, Kartar Nagar in New Usmanpur area.
"The body was locked in a trunk which was initially spotted by a sanitation employee. On opening it he found the body, left it on the spot, and fled. The act was spotted by a passerby who immediately raised an alarm and called the police. A lady's suit and a blanket were also found in the iron box with the body. When the body was identified it turned out to be the missing girl's body and then her parents were informed," said a senior police officer.
Investigations revealed the girl first went missing when she was heading from her aunt's house to her residence, which is barely 500 metres away. A door to door search and verification of persons were conducted by the police for any leads.
"The identification of the ladies suit and blanket led the team to a man who reportedly went missing from the day the girl's body was recovered. He was identified as a resident of the same area. He was arrested following a raid and during interrogation he revealed that he saw the girl going home alone and approached her. He then lured her to come along with him and took her along to a secluded corner where he raped her," said a senior police officer.
Sources said, that when the accused realised that the family and local residents had started a search for the girl, he got scared that she would reveal his identity to her parents. He then smothered the girl. "To avoid detection of the body he draped it in a blanket and dumped it into a metal trunk. He then threw the trunk in a drain believing that it will not be traced," the police said.
