Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated 810 community toilets in 21 complexes across the Capital on Thursday. The inauguration event was held at JJ Basti, Madrasi Basti near the Railway Line, Jal Vihar, Lajpat Nagar.

The inauguration of the toilets is part of the government's bid to make all slum areas in the Delhi and the NCR region defecation free by March 31, 2018. It also, as the Chief Minister, stated is especially important for women. Post the inauguration Kejriwal later tweeted, "Imp step for women safety who used to defecate in open in JJ areas. After CCTV cameras in buses, this is another step to ensure women safety."

The toilets have been constructed by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB). DUSIB was entrusted with the task of providing basic amenities in the slum areas of the capital city including community toilets/Jan Suvidha Complexes (JSC) for people residing in those slum areas. The Delhi government has constructed more than 10,000 community toilets since it came to power.

There are approximately 1,310 small huts in this JJ Basti. Due to the absence of any public toilets so far, slum dwellers were forced to defecate in the open near the railway line. The matter was then taken up with the Land Owning Agency, i.e. Railway Authorities to give permission for the construction of community toilets for the welfare of the JJ dwellers and to improve the environment.

Thanking the Railway Department, Chief Minister also tweeted, "110 toilets on railway land. Thanks Railways for giving NOCs. Railways, kindly give NOCs in other areas also. We have to work together."
