Civic bodies will frame their own policy deciding penalty for users under the Delhi government’s new draft plan. In order to enforce the policy, the North and South civic bodies have identified land for building 60 new parking spaces.

Civic agencies including the three municipal corporations, the Delhi Development Authority and Delhi Metro, among others — which will be the enforcement agencies for the plan — will revamp the rules for parking in the city as per the guidelines of the draft policy.

While the new draft policy comes with increased rates for both vehicle parking in general and even charges for parking on roadsides, the civic bodies still have to address the issue of new parking spaces.

While the South Corporation has identified land for 40 new stack parking lots, the North Corporation will come up with 20 parking facilities. Of the 20 new parking lots in the North, eight to 10 will be multi-level parking facilities while the remaining will be stack parking spaces.

“We are deliberating on stringent penalties for non-compliance, as parking space is a major issue in Delhi. The existing surface parking lots are overloaded due to which people park all around it leading to chaos. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has given us six plots where stack parking spaces will be made,” said PK Gupta, commissioner, North MCD.

South Corporation Commissioner PK Goel, said, “We are going to enforce the policy, once it is final. A proposal for 40 new stack parkings to be developed over two years is underway. We are deliberating on the suggestions at present.”

The government’s transport department has kept the draft policy open for suggestions from the civic bodies, as well as the general public for a month.
