A 22-year-old bridegroom was shot dead when a bullet shot in celebratory firing pierced through him in Shahadra's Kalandar colony cluster area on Tuesday evening. The accused, one of the invitees to the wedding, is absconding, police said.

According to senior officers, it was around 8 pm when Deepak, the bridegroom, after a few ceremonies at his residence in the JJ Cluster area, hopped on to a mare for the baraat to move to Faridabad. As the celebration began, one of the guests, identified later as Aadil, who was known to the victim's sister, pulled out a pistol and fired a shot in the air.

"The bullet, however, hit Deepak who suddenly fell off the mare, bleeding profusely. He was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur hospital and police were informed. It was around 2 am the Deepak succumbed to his injuries during treatment. His family was informed and the body was sent for a post-mortem,"a senior police officer said.

DCP Shahadra, Nupur Prasad said that the accused has been identified and he is absconding. "Efforts to trace and arrest him are underway. A case of murder and under other relevant sections has been registered and the matter is being probed," she said.

Deepak worked as a conductor in a bus and lived with his parents while his elder sister lived nearby.
