The Bharatiya Janata Party has taken on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government in the city for 'not doing' enough preparations for the upcoming Chhath pooja which will take place after a week. Lakhs of devotees throng Yamuna Ghat every year to worship the sun god in a festival that lasts for three days.

In a recent statement, Delhi BJP Manoj Tiwari "expressed doubts" over the government's claims that it is making efforts to clean the ghats to help people celebrate. He claimed that the Arvind Kejriwal government was "playing politics" over the festival.

"The river ghats have not been cleaned. Garbage and filth is strewn across banks where lakhs of people will offset prayers. AAP is playing with religious sentiments of the people," alleged Tiwari. He added that lakhs of devotees are gearing up for their festival while AAP is indifferent towards their faith and devotion.

The senior BJP leader also accused AAP of seizing the festival to promote its chief minister. He said that samitis are being coerced to put large photographs of CM Arvind Kejriwal on the hoardings greeting people. He also claimed that the AAP government has instructed its officials to not cooperate with Ghat samitis for festive arrangements without approval from area legislators. "The city government's promises are only on pen and paper. They are only doing lip service," argued Tiwari.

He further said that the preparations cannot be left at the mercy of the Kejriwal government, hence he has written to the three civic bodies to provide facilities to devotees during the puja, especially sanitation. "BJP workers will also assist to ensure smooth celebrations by offering 'shram daan' to officials of municipal corporations," said Tiwari.
