The third umpire during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) made a howler that went completely unnoticed.

Rohit Sharma's MI defeated Virat Kohli's RCB by 46 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday. While the result was never in doubt, as the visitors lost key wickets during their chase of 214, there was one umpiring mistake that went unnoticed by everyone.

During the 18th over, Jasprit Bumrah got the wicket of Umesh Yadav by bowling a bouncer and getting the pacer caught at covers. As Umesh was walking back, the on-field umpire stopped him so that he could check for no ball. And that's when the mistake happened.

The third umpire saw a replay in which Bumrah's foot was well behind the popping crease, prompting Sunil Gavaskar to comment on air that the review should've never been taken. The only issue was that in the replay seen by the third umpire, Umesh was standing at the non-striker's end. If Umesh was the one who got out, how could he be standing at the other end on the same ball? The third umpire failed to realise that in the replay he was seeing, it should've been Kohli at the other end and not Umesh.

Although the scorecard read 137/8 at the end of the 18th over at that point, with RCB having no real chance of winning, such glaring errors should never happen. The broadcaster could make a mistake and show the wrong replay, but it's the umpire's duty to make sure he knows what he's doing. Imagine if such a silly mistake was made with the match hanging in the balance. The cash-rich T20 league would've been left red-faced.

Rohit struck a brilliant 94 before his bowlers produced a clinical performance as MI beat RCB by 46 runs. Put into bat, Mumbai recovered from a shock start of 0 for 2 to post 213 for 6, their highest score of the season, mainly through the splendid batting of Rohit (94 in 52 balls) and opener Evin Lewis (65 in 42 balls).

Then, the Mumbai bowlers led by left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya (3/28) stopped RCB at 167 for 8 in 20 overs to notch up their first win in their fourth match of the season.
