Mumbai debutant Prithvi Shaw is on 99 against Tamil Nadu in Rajkot.

Vijay Shankar to Shaw, a good length ball outside the off stump, Shaw gets an outside edge and the ball goes straight to the third man.

Umpire asks Shaw to hang around and the replays show Shankar has overstepped.

Shaw gets another shot at a century. Three dots before 17-year-old Shaw reaches the three-digit figure on the First-Class debut.

Sixteen months later, Shaw is on 99 at the same venue of Rajkot but this time he is entering the big world of Test cricket.

Shaw leans forward into the drive towards sweeper cover and takes off. Shaw becomes the 15th Indian to score a hundred on Test debut, first since Rohit Sharma in 2013. Shaw is the second youngest Indian to score a Test hundred after Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar and once again, a Mumbai cricketer justifies the cricket culture of his city.

Shaw is among those rare Indian cricketers who have scored a century on debut in all the three First-Class events – Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Test cricket.

The 18-year-old Mumbai batsman became the fourth youngest Test centurion on debut after Bangladesh’s Ashraful, Zimbabwe’s Masakadza and Pakistan’s Saleem Malik.

Meanwhile, overall Shaw (99 balls) registered the third fastest century on Test debut after Shikhar Dhawan (85 balls), whom he replaced in the Indian squad for the West Indies series and West Indies’ Dwayne Smith (93 balls).

Earlier before lunch, Shaw became the youngest Indian to score a hundred on Test debut. Shaw, who became the 293rd cricketer to represent India in Tests, showed supreme confidence from ball one, on which he offered a watchful leave.

The youngster punched the second ball he faced towards the cover boundary for a three, his first runs in international cricket, easing whatever nerves were left inside him.
