The Indian cricket team is set to face off against Afghanistan in the inaugural T20I of the thrilling three-match series, taking place in Mohali on Thursday. This contest holds immense significance for the Indian side, as it serves as a rehearsal for the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024. It will be their final T20I assignment before the highly anticipated global event.
Adding to the excitement, Rohit Sharma, a seasoned player known for his exceptional skills, has been appointed as the captain for this series. This marks his return to the T20I format after a hiatus of 14 months.
However, it is worth noting that the formidable Virat Kohli will not be available for the first game. Fans will have to wait until the second and third T20Is to witness his remarkable talent in action, as he will be joining the team for those matches.
Follow all the latest updates here:
Omarzai with his last over. Rinku takes advantage of the width offered and skillfully guides the ball past the short third for a boundary. He then flicks the ball for a single, allowing Dube to reach his well-deserved half-century in just 38 balls.
Mujeeb returns for his final over. Jitesh skillfully sweeps the ball beyond the reach of the fine leg fielder, earning four runs. However, his luck runs out as he attempts to hit the ball over long on, only to be caught by a fielder positioned deep in the field.
Gulbadin Naib steps up to bowl. He starts with a deceptive slow ball, but Dube anticipates it and expertly drives it beyond mid-off for a boundary, setting the tone for the over. Naib then delivers a length ball with excessive width, allowing Jitesh to powerfully slap it towards the covers, resulting in another four runs.
Farooqi approaches the wicket from an angle to bowl to Gill, delivering a back-of-the-length ball. Gill responds with a powerful short-arm jab, resulting in a boundary. Gill repeats his success with another four runs. This time, he confidently advances down the track, creating space, and skillfully strikes the ball past the fielders at covers for yet another boundary.
OUT! Rohit Sharma is run out. There was a miscommunication between him and Shubman Gill. Rohit struck the ball straight towards mid-off and immediately called for a run. Unfortunately, Gill was engrossed in watching the ball and failed to respond to the call.
Arshdeep is set to deliver the final over. And it begins with a resounding FOUR! A full toss outside the leg-stump, and Najibullah elegantly flicks it behind square-leg, securing a boundary. Another FOUR! This time, Najibullah takes advantage of a short delivery and slashes it high into the air. Tilak, in a valiant effort, attempts to reach the ball as he sprints towards the boundary. Another FOUR! The ball races off Najibullah bat, leaving the fielders helpless.
Omarzai is dismissed on the first ball of the over as he attempts to reach a delivery pitched wide outside the off-stump. He chops the ball onto his stumps. Nabi, on the other hand, departs after scoring 42 runs, marking the second wicket in the over for Mukesh.
SIX! Omarzai gets low to execute a powerful slog sweep, sending the ball soaring over wide long-on for a maximum. FOUR! Nabi cleverly moves away from the leg-stump, connecting with a pitched-up delivery and driving it into the gap at deep midwicket. This boundary brings up a hundred runs for the Afghans in just 14.3 overs. And another FOUR follows! With a fierce slash, the ball evades the fielder at point, racing away for a consecutive boundary.
Shivam Dube steps up to bowl. He delivers a magnificent delivery outside off, completely deceiving Ibrahim who fails to make contact. OUT! Ibrahim's dismissal comes right after Dube's redemption for dropping a catch in the third over. With just his second ball, Dube manages to snatch Ibrahim's wicket as the batter carelessly slashes the ball straight into the hands of the cover fielder.
Gurbaz attempts a slog sweep, but unfortunately, he only manages to get an inside edge onto his pad. In the very next ball, he steps away from the leg-stump and aggressively slashes it, but it goes straight to the fielder at cover. There is a loud appeal for lbw but Rohit shows no interest in reviewing it as the ball was clearly sliding down the leg-stump.
Gurbaz receives a full delivery, which swings into his pads. He skillfully flicks it towards midwicket, resulting in a dot ball. The next delivery angles away from him, but it remains closer to the off-stump. Gurbaz decides against attempting a punch through cover. A full delivery on off-stump follows, and Gurbaz confidently defends it towards the cover region. Maiden over.

Rohit Sharma - We will bowl first. No particular reason, the pitch is good and it doesn't change a lot here. A lot to gain from the 3 games, we haven't had too much T20 cricket leadingto the World Cup, there's IPL, but this is an international game andwe'll try to achieve a few things. I had a chat with rahul bhai regarding the combination going forward and what we need to do as a group. That's what we'll try to do, but winning is the most important thing. Sanju Samson, Avesh, Yashashvi (who didn't pull off well) and Kuldeep miss out
Ibrahim Zadran - We wanted to bowl first as well, but it's not a big problem, we'll try and execute our plans. This is massive opportunity to get experience ahead of the T20 World Cup. We'll try and play some positive cricket. Noor Ahamad, Sharafuddin, Saleem Saifi aren't playing, forgot the rest of the guys.
Rashid Khan will not be participating in the series as he is still in the process of recovering from back surgery. His absence in the T20I series against India presents a golden opportunity for other Afghan players to showcase their skills against formidable opponents and establish themselves as household names, just like the renowned star leg-spinner.
India's head coach, Rahul Dravid, announced on Wednesday that Virat Kohli would be absent from the first T20I due to personal commitments. However, fans can rejoice as Kohli will be back in action for the second and third matches. After a hiatus of approximately 14 months, Kohli has made a comeback to India's T20I squad. With his absence in the opening game, all eyes will be on the seasoned veteran, Rohit Sharma, who will undoubtedly take center stage.
