Markets off to a flying start, Sensex rises 246 points

Samvat 2075 kicked off with a bang as both the benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, ended on a positive note in the special one-hour Mahurat Session conducted on Wednesday, the first day of Samvat 2075.

The Sensex rose 245.77 points to close at 35237.68 points, while Nifty ended at 10598.40, up 68.40 points.

As Diwali marks the beginning of the Hindu calendar year Samvat 2075, it is believed that Muhurat trading on this day brings wealth and prosperity throughout the year.

The Sensex opened 310 points higher at 35301.88 while the Nifty opened above 10600 level.

Sensex touched a high of 35302.25 points and a low of 35183.17, while Nifty 50 opened at 10614.45 and touched a high of 10616.45 and a low of 10582.30 points.

All trades executed in this Diwali Muhurat trading session would result in settlement obligations, the NSE said in a statement.

During the Muhurat trading session, all sectors ended in green. S&P BSE Auto gained 1.08%, followed by IT and FMCG stocks. S&P BSE Small Cap gained 1.19%.

Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, Infosys, Bajaj Auto, Hero Moto Corp and Vedanta were major gainers while Bharti Airtel and Axis Banks were among the losers.

N S Venkatesh, market expert, said, "With strong macro-economic fundamentals in place the Samvat 2075 got off to a flying start with both the Sensex and the Nifty ending on a positive note. The positive opening heralds a good year of trading in the markets. On the Nifty, the major gainers were ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and HDFC Bank. Besides this Infosys and M&M also made its mark. Metal, bank and automobile stock were the major gainers in the Sensex."

The BSE and NSE will remain closed today on the occasion of Balipratipada.
