Defence Expo 2018: What all will be showcased, participating nations and other details you should know

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Chennai to inaugurate Defence Expo 2018. The 10th edition of the annual event would be held in Chennai from April 11 to April 14. The four-day long Defence Expo 2018 would showcase the country's strength. 

Defence Expo 2018 would also focus upon to transform India -- the largest importer of military platforms and weapons -- into a hub of military manufacturing.

India is expected to spend close to USD 300 billion in the next five years in procuring defence equipment and almost all major global defence firms are eyeing a slice of it.

Below we have listed out all the major details you should know about the Defence Expo 2018: 

1. Who all are participating? 
Defence Expo 2018 would witness the participation of around 47 nations including Russia, the United States, UK, Afghanistan and Sweden, Finland, Italy, Madagascar, Myanmar, Nepal, Portugal, Seychelles and Vietnam among others.

According to the Defence Minister Nirama Sitharaman, 670 defence firms, including 154 foreign manufacturers, are participating in the Defence Expo this year. 

2. Where it would be held? 
The four-day-long, Defence Expo 2018 would be held on the outskirts of Chennai and close to the temple town of Mahabalipuram. 

3. What is the theme of Defence Expo 2018 
The theme of the expo is "India: The Emerging Defence Manufacturing Hub."

4. What major firms are attending? Major international companies, which are participating at the expo include Lockheed Martin, Boeing (US), Saab (Sweden), Airbus, Rafale (France), Rosonboron Exports, United Shipbuilding (Russia), BAE Systems (UK), Sibat (Israel), Wartsila (Finland) and Rhode and Schwarz (Germany).

5. What all weapons would be showcased? 
The weapons and platforms being displayed include the Tejas fighter jets, advanced towed artillery gun systems (ATAGS) designed by the DRDO Arjun Mark 2 tank and Dhanush artillery guns.

The DRDO's exhibits include the Nirbhay missile system with launcher, autonomous unmanned ground vehicle (AUGV), MBT Arjun Mk-I tank, Astra missile, low level transportable radar (LLTR) system, medium power radar (MPR) system and Varunastra -- heavy weight anti submarine electric torpedo.

The exhibition is spread over an area of 2.90 lakh square feet.

6. Timings and Entre yee for the general public

The timings to attend would be 9 in the morning till 5 in the evening. However, entry for general public would be free on the last day i.e April 14. And if you are planning to vosit, make sure to take your valid ID proof along.
