Right from the time it was announced that Ishaan Khatter is making his foray into Bollywood, elder brother Shahid Kapoor has fielded questions about guiding his sibling. With his debut film Beyond The Clouds opening in cinemas today, we decided to ask Ishaan about the relationship he shares with Shahid, and what might get them to do a film together someday. Here’s what the young actor had to say...

How close are you to Shahid?

We are extremely close. I know he is highly protective of me and always there for me. We share a bond that any other brothers would share. He has great insight and perspective about things and it turns out to be correct, almost all the time. Which is why whenever there’s something we disagree about, he just says one thing, ‘Vadda kaun?’

Have you learnt your lessons by observing the highs and lows of your brother’s career?

No, it’s nothing like that. My brother has been an inspiration for me. He’s a fantastic actor who has always told me to do my work well. I don’t think he wants me to plan my career on the basis of what he’s done right.

Shahid has balanced both content-oriented cinema and the masala genre. Do you plan to do the same?

Yes, if I get an opportunity to do a masala film, I’ll definitely do it. Why not? As long as it’s a good movie and has something to offer. I might not gravitate towards a mindless film. However, if I ever get the opportunity to be a part of one, I won’t be averse to it at all. What I would be averse to, though, is a pointless movie.

Will we see you in a film together soon?

Pray for it, we will do it. Everyone’s saying it, so there must be a reason why they want to see us together. I’ll be on cloud nine if I get that kind of opportunity, but we shouldn’t be doing it just because people want us to. It has to be the right kind of a film and have equal opportunity for both of us.

There’s a responsibility that you have, especially when the audience expects something like that. More than anything, both of us are so passionate about cinema that we would want it to be the best film that it can ever be. If I have the opportunity and I’m so lucky to be able to work with my brother in a movie, I’ll be super happy. But it’s not something I’m pointedly working towards.

Would you like to do a dance film then?

I think I’m a decent dancer. My brother’s better than me. I would love to do such a film. But I don’t want to do a movie that uses dance as a saleable aspect or a formula. It should be called a dance film for a reason and made by someone who’s passionate about it and has a story to tell.
