More trouble for Sanjay Leela Bansali's Padmavati; this time over a disclaimer

From the beginning, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati has been embroiled in controversies. After several protests and threats, the makers voluntarily deferred its release. However, in a fresh turn of events, the Deepika Padukone-Shahid Kapoor-Ranveer Singh-starrer has run into a dispute with the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC). This time, it’s over the disclaimer mentioned in the certification application by the film’s producers.

It might be recalled that last month, the CBFC had refused to certify Padmavati as the disclaimer (whether it is based on fiction or historical facts) had not been mentioned by the makers. Now, the new disclaimer has raised questions about how the film is viewed and certified by the CBFC. Meanwhile, After Hrs has learnt that the film may after all get a Censor clearance on December 18 and hit the marquee next month.  

Theatre owners and multiplex chains are waiting for an announcement of its release. An exhibitor says, on the condition of anonymity, “There’s been no official intimation from the producers. Whenever they plan to release it, we will be happy to give them the promised number of screens.” Another source says, “Once the certificate comes, the producers will decide when they want to release Padmavati. As of now, they’re looking at January 5 and January 12.” 

However, another exhibitor says, “Padmavati will only release in February next year. It’s looking for a vacant spot so that it gets a longer run at the cinemas.”
