Bangalore is undergoing a metamorphosis. And one element of change is the Metro.

These days, one can witness huge cranes and earth movers in motion at several parts of the city where the underground phase of Metro is coming up. Namma Metro looks all set with its underground work on Phase-I of the project.

Of the 42.30 km stretch of the entire Phase-I, 8.8 km is underground. After MG Road station, the elevated trackway goes underground after Karnataka State Cricket Academy (KSCA). The track moves under Cubbon Road in front of the GPO and then takes a turn towards Amabedkar Veedhi. It then moves along that road to Majestic, from where one branch moves towards Chickpet and up to KR Market.

After KR Market, it takes the elevated pathway to Lalbagh. On the other end, it elevates from the City Railway Station towards Magadi Road.

Huge earth movers, tunnel boring machines, earth pressure balance machines and slurry machines have been at work all day at Cubbon Road, KSCA Grounds, KR Circle (in front of Central College) and KSRTC bus station in Majestic. The underground tunnel will be drilled through the soil, soft rock and hard-rock layers of the earth. BMRCL studied the varying soil profiles and utilities which are underground, surface vibrations and its affects, before starting on the underground work.

At the Cubbon Park station, the soldier pile retaining walls have been completed. These walls are made of steel, timber, reinforced concrete and pre-tensioned concrete. These prevent seepage and de-watering within the construction.

The tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are being used for major works like cutting and covering construction.

Already, 14,000 cubic meters of soil has been excavated at the station opposite central college named after Sir M Vishvesvaraya. The traffic police have put up a notice board informing about the blast work which will be shortly commenced. These small blasts underground, will be done to create space within the hard-rock layer to further the work.

The tunnel-boring machines are at work at the Central Junction of the Cubbon Road Circle, opposite GPO. The road has been completely taken away and barricaded by the Metro for the construction of the underground station of Cubbon Park.

While a lot of work is already being done, most of it still remains to be completed. With the deadline of March 2011 mentioned on the boards at these stations, they seem to have a long way to go.
