In a surprising twist to the II PUC question paper leak case, primary and secondary education minister Visveshwara Hegde Kageri on Monday suspected the involvement of the tuition mafia behind the episode while many MLCs, cutting across the party lines, demanded on Monday in the council to cancel the suspension of lecturers in connection with the case.

MLCs Narayanaswamy, Puttanna, Venkatesh, Dr Shivayogi Swamy, Sudarshan, Ganesh Karnik, Maritibbe Gowda and MC Nanaiah raised the issue and condemned the action taken against lecturers.

They maintained that Physics and Mathematics question papers were leaked, and action was initiated against Kannada, Commerce and English lecturers. Facing attacks from members in the council over the question paper leaks, Kageri said there could be three possibilities for the leakage of the question papers.

“I suspect the hand of tuition mafia, insiders (who could have done it for money) or those with vested interests. The department is doing a good job. To defame the organisation, question papers might have been leaked,” said Kageri.
CID probe

Kageri said he would take all steps to identify the culprits. The decision to hand over the case to Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was taken without any delay after discussing the issue with chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda.

“We have given a deadline to the CID to complete the investigation. They’ve already arrested some people in this connection,” Kageri said. He said that the action was taken based on the brief given by local officers in the education department. “After the question papers were leaked, these lecturers called students to their tuition centres and gave them the answers. How should I deal with it?” he said.

The members maintained that he should not take action now. “Give it some time for the investigation. If found guilty, jail them. In order to save their skin, the officials at PU board are misguiding him and the minister should be aware of this fact,” said a member.
