Just how dangerous traffic policing actually is could be anybody’s guess. But this incident indicates it in abundance.
In a case reminiscent of traffic head constable ‘Meese’ Thimmaiah or Cubbon Park traffic sub-inspector Arun Kumar being fatally knocked down while on duty, a sub-inspector attached to Banaswadi traffic police station, L Lingaraju, is now battling for life after being knocked down by a speeding two-wheeler in Kalyan Nagar on Sunday evening around 8.50pm. The two-wheeler was ridden by a private firm employee named Raviraj Pandey.
The accident occurred at a junction on 80-Feet Road on Outer Ring Road in Kalyan Nagar. Traffic police who were present at the spot said Lingaraju was on duty to check over-speeding and drunk-driving when Pandey crashed into him. Both Pandey and Lingaraju fell on the road with the latter sustaining head injuries.
Pandey sustained some bruises and was taken into custody. His motorcycle, too, was seized although he was found not to be under the influence of alcohol.
Sub-inspector Lingaraju was immediately rushed to Hosmat for treatment. The doctors refrained from divulging details about Lingaraju’s condition, but they did discover that he was not only bleeding from a deep cut on the back of his head, but he was also bleeding internally as blood was flowing out of his ear — a sign of haemorrhage.
“We are interrogating (Pandey) to get details about him and why he was over-speeding,” said Meenakshi, Banasawadi traffic police station inspector. Lingaraju was taken for a CT scan after which he was moved into the ICU. Lingaraju was transferred to Banaswadi station just three months ago. His family, staying in Sheshadripuram police quarters, were informed about the incident, and rushed to the hospital.
