Tonight, Bangalore set to honour selfless servants

Bangalore is gearing up to award its citizens and their extraordinary work for the city or the public as the Namma Bengalurean Award is just around the corner. This year, the glittering award night on Wednesday will witness 21 finalists, chosen from hundreds, from which one person will be awarded for his extraordinary contribution to the city, and another as the best sportsperson of the year for which four finalists have been selected.

Wednesday night will also witness gala performances by sandalwood actors Guru Kiran and actress Sanjana and the Kannada rock band Swarathma, performances by Stem, a mandalaya dance troupe. The event will kickstart at 7pm at Bangalore Palace.

Hundreds of nominations were filed between December 2010 and January 2011, from which 21 finalists were selected from different categories by jury members including Lokayukta justice N Santosh Hegde, Dr A Ravindra, Anil Kumble, K Jairaj, Ramesh Aravind, HS Balram, Dr Ruth Manorama, Major General MC Nanjappa, Tejaswini Ananth Kumar, Pradeep Kar, Ashok Soota, Anil Menon, Vinod Hayagriv, Suresh Heblikar, Dr Ashwin Mahesh, RK Misra, Subhashini Vasanth, Ashish Ballal, Reeth Abraham, Prakash Belwadi, Sajan Poovayya, professor GS Siddhalingiah and Rajeev Chandrashekhar.

The finalists were nominated under the categories of  individual, institution, sportsperson, entrepreneur, public individual, public institution and Namma Bengalurean 2010.

“We spent days and hours sifting through hundreds of nomination forms and shortlisted 21. The shortlisted candidates are the quintessential Bengalureans who we all should admire and emulate,” said Justice Santosh Hegde about this year’s nominees.

Rajeev Chandrashekhar, MP and founder of the Awards said, “These awards are meant to set high standards of social and civic contribution to the city and the 21 selected are the best we have seen so far. I wish them the best for the awards and hope the candidates will continue their good work.”
