The movers and shakers of the original Silicon Valley, in San Francisco , are keen to tap into the progress that Bangalore is making in research and development.

“Bangalore is the R&D innovation gateway in India . In fact, the Bay Area is very keen that a US consulate be set up in Bangalore and are lobbying for it,” said MN Vidyashankar, principal secretary, department of IT&BT, science and technology and e-governance on Tuesday.

He was speaking at the curtain raiser of Bangalore IT.Biz 2011, to will be held during October 18-20. The theme of this year’s event is ‘India Innovates’. The ecosystem in Bangalore is conducive towards this, having 381 R&D centres and contributing 41% of the overall innovation in the country.

Vidyashankar said the whole event is driven by the industry alone, which is making all the difference to the sector. He said the government is trying its best to ensure the city stays ahead in the sphere of technology. “The animation and gaming policy is in its final states of clearances from the state government,” he informed.

S Gopalakrishnan, executive co-chairman of Infosys, and chairman of Vision Group on IT, said India is well placed to leverage advancement in IT. He added that Bangalore IT.Biz 2011 will help the city cement its place in the global technology space.

“The city plays an important role—the who’s who of the technology world has a presence here. This year’s event will give a lot of emphasis to SMEs [small and medium enterprises] and help them get funding through venture capitalists,” he said.
Former president APJ Abdul Kalam will inaugurate the event and deliver the opening address on October 18.
