The Tamil Nadu police have sent the “relevant materials” of a case against self-styled godman Paramahamsa Nithyananda to the Karnataka director general of police by registered post on Friday. Karnataka police, however, expressed ignorance over the matter.

“We have sent all relevant materials to the Karnataka DGP by registered post. Further investigations in the case registered under various sections of the law will be conducted by the Karnataka police,” Tamil Nadu DGP Letika Saran told reporters in Madurai on Monday. The case was being transferred to Karnataka since the reported offence was allegedly committed at Nithyananda’s headquarters in Bidadi, about 35km from the city.
A senior police officer here said they were yet to hear anything on the transfer of the case.

“We are yet to receive the case files and documents. We did get to know a week ago that the Tamil Nadu police are sending it, but we did not get any further intimation or communication,” additional director general of police (law and order) AR Infant said, adding, “Until we receive the case, we cannot take any action against the godman.”

The case was registered in Chennai on March 6, under sections 295 (A), 420, 376, 377, 506 (i) and 120 (B) of the Indian Penal Code. The case was filed on a complaint by Nithyananda’s former devotee Karuppa Lenin.

Lenin accused Nithyananda of “misbehaving” with “beautiful” women and “forcing” them to perform lewd acts. He also handed over a CD containing the “raunchy bedroom” scenes of Nithayanda to the police commissioner.

The police had earlier booked a case of cheating against Nithyananda based on complaints filed by high court advocates. Chennai police commissioner T Rajendran said that the cheating case would be handled by the Tamil Nadu police.

Meanwhile, the godman said that it was indeed him who was in the tape. Nithyananda claimed that he was ill and in a trance when he was taped. However, he added that the tape was manipulated and morphed.

Nithyananda, who spoke to the media in Haridwar, was expected to hold a press conference at Bidadi on April 1.
