Prof UR Ananthamurthy has been nominated as Tagore Professor for Indian Literatures at the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). He intends to start a visual culture course for school and college teachers, among other activities.

It will not lead to a degree, but just a certificate, the writer said.
The IGNOU Tagore chair will be formally inaugurated on November 20 in Bangalore. The highlight of the event will be a Kavigoshti where 16 noted poets, including those who write in Manipuri, Telugu, Tulu and Mythili will feature.

“We want languages to travel. They can travel through translation. The Tagore chair will facilitate this,” said Manu Baligar, director of the department of Kannada and Culture. The idea is to bring the flavour of other languages to Kannada and vice versa, under the aegis of IGNOU, he said.

“We have to celebrate plurality of culture. That is what Gandhi and Tagore did. They did not call India a country, but a civilisation,” Murthy said. The author also plans to initiate a host of activities in the year to come. It is not just about literature, but many other art forms. It will be an attempt to reflect the multifaceted personality of Tagore, the author added.

The honour is being conferred on Murthy during the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. Talking about the Nobel laureate’s greatness, Murthy said he was a role model after poet Kalidasa, who was poet Pampa’s inspiration.

Dr BS Sudhindra, regional director, IGNOU said with the establishment of the Tagore chair, the university hopes to initiate activities that will strengthen the relationship of Kannada with other languages.

This is the only chair for languages for the whole country. Last year, the Raman chair was established for science education and based in Delhi.

The Tagore chair will be located in Bangalore and all its activities will go on during the year in Kannada Bhavan. The programmes may continue even after a year, Dr Sudhindra said. The inaugural event will be held at Yavanika hall and will be attended by social psychologist, Prof Ashis Nandi.
