Three persons were killed when a speeding multi-utility vehicle rammed into a two-wheeler and toppled in ASC Layout, Whitefield, at 1 am on Thursday.

Bikers Sujith Kumar Mathu, 27, a native of West Bengal, and Vaibhav Singh, 26, of Chhattisgarh, and the MUV traveller, Sanjith Mahapatra, 23, of Orissa, were killed in the accident.

Police said the rashly driven MUV mowed down the home-bound bikers before hitting the median. It toppled in front of Andhra Spice Hotel at ASC Layout, Kundalahalli Main Road. All three died en route to the nearby Vydehi Medical College.

Incidentally, the grievously injured men had remained at the scene of accident for about 10 minutes, as there was no one on that stretch of road at the time. Passersby rushed the men to  hospital. The driver of the MUV fled the scene soon after the accident, police said. The Sumo was returning after dropping off a few employees of a security firm.

Mathu was employed with the Vydehi Medical College in Whitefield. A hospital spokesperson said his shift had ended at 4 pm, and expressed ignorance over his late night travel to his residence at Annasandrapalya. He was riding pillion on the bike.

Singh, who was riding the two-wheeler, had been working as a physiotherapist at a fitness centre on Old Airport Road. He was residing in a rented accommodation in Rajaji Nagar with his brother Ashish Singh, a software engineer.

Police said that a post-mortem examination would indicate whether the bikers were drunk.  Whitefield traffic police have confiscated both vehicles. A search is on for the missing driver.
