She won Rs1 lakh in a Kannada reality show, but ended her life on Saturday midnight, having failed to change the society which, according to her, looked down upon the poor and the parentless, like herself.

Nagaveni, 23, of Bidadi,  through sheer coincidence, was to be featured on Sunday night on a television channel telecasting that very episode (Kaiyalli Koti Helibittu Hodiri, similar to the Hindi version of Kaun Banega Crorepati) in which she won Rs1 lakh. Nagaveni, in her suicide note, has pledged the amount to certain people. She ended her life by hanging at her residence in Rajarajeshwarinagar on Saturday night.

A few hours before she killed herself, she sent a text message to a friend (name withheld), informing about her decision. However, the friend’s attempts to contact her and talk her out of it, proved futile. Upon rushing to Nagaveni’s residence at midnight, she found her hanging with a suicide note addressed to her elder sister Ashwini.

“I am depressed over the poverty in the society. So I am taking this decision to kill myself…This society looks down upon people who have lost their parents and who are poor…” the suicide note read.

The police said Nagaveni was the daughter of a police head constable Hanumanth Kumar and Soubhagya. Five years ago, Soubhagya and Hanumanth Kumar died within two months of each other—she, due to cancer, and he, due to heartbreak over his wife’s death.

Despite working with a private firm, Nagaveni may have found it difficult to make ends meet with the repayment of loans, weighing upon her, the police said. Investigations revealed that her brother, living in Bidadi, and she had a fight over parental property, but the police do not suspect that has anything to do with the suicide.

The police also found that Nagaveni used to stay with her sister Ashwini, who was married, but fearing that she was beginning to become a burden,  she decided to live on her own, alone.
