There was chaos on Tuesday at pre-university exam centres where the second-year maths exam was to be held. The exam got postponed to April 3 after reported leakage of question paper; many students came to know of it only after they reached the exam centres.

“I was thoroughly prepared and it’s a disappointment. Preparing again for the exams is a burden,” said Likitha RV, student of Vijaya Composite College. “I went to the college to check, since we received the news only in the morning,” she added.

Another student called it unfortunate. “Since it is one of the toughest subjects, I was hoping to get done with it and prepare for the rest of the exams,” he said.

Father Gilbert Saldhana, principal, St Joseph’s PU Composite College, said many students came to the college despite learning that the exam was cancelled as they wanted to verify the news themselves.

Rashmi V Mahesh, commissioner of the pre-university education board, said, “Initially, we said that it (the news that question paper was leaked) appeared to be a rumour. However, later we found that the questions were tallying with the question paper, hence we decided to postpone the exam.”

According to the sources at the PU board, the first few complaints regarding the question papers were received from a private college in Chintamani. Some unknown persons had sold hand-written question papers to a few students of a private college in Chintamani, said a source.

They added that students had paid Rs3,000 for a question paper. Later, the same question paper was circulated in parts of Kolar district, including Mulubagalu and Malur towns. Some students even paid up to Rs20,000.

“Following the news of question paper leak, we directed our officials at Kolar district to scan and send the copy to headquarters. As it was matching with the question paper finalised for Tuesday’s exam, we decided to postpone the exam,” said a senior officer.

Primary and secondary education minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri said the government would not spare the culprits who leaked the question paper. He said a CID inquiry would be held to get to the heart of the matter.
