Notorious criminal and member of the Huskur grama panchayat, Bettanagere Seena alias Srinivas, was killed in a police encounter on Friday morning at Syndicate Bank Layout near Sunkadakatte in Tavarekere police station limits. The 37-year-old was wanted in the murder case of BML Krishnappa, who was killed on Tumkur Road near Nelamangala on July 25.

Seena had been absconding since the day Krishnappa was murdered, and the police had formed four teams to nab him, inspector general of police (IGP), Amar Kumar Pandey said.

Pandey said, one of the teams received a tip-off about Seena hiding in a house in Herohalli in Magadi taluk. The team led by additional superintendent of police (Bangalore rural district) N Nagaraj rushed to the scene and surrounded the house. The police asked Seena and his associates to surrender, but Seena did not adhere to the warning and started shooting from inside.

When police opened fire in self-defence, Seena and his associates started running away from the house. During the crossfiring four bullets hit Seena (one in chest, two in stomach and one in the face), who collapsed after running for about 200 meters, Pandey said.

Police rushed Seena to a hospital but he died on the way to the hospital.

According to police, there were four persons including Seena in the house. Three of his associates managed to escaped during the encounter.

An officer from the team said that when the chase began, Seena retaliated with two rounds of fire from his country-made pistol, and his associates threw bricks at cops. The police are not sure about the identity of the three of Seena’s associates who were with him in the house. “We don’t know who were with him in the house.

They managed to escape. We will find out about their identities in further investigation,” he said.

During further investigation, the police came to know that the house belonged Seena’s friend Herohalli Manja alias Manjunath, a teacher in Hassan. Police also suspect that Manjunath along with Veerabhadregowda, a tent house owner and resident of Hegganahalli, and one more person were the persons in the house with Seena at the time of the encounter.

Two SIs injured
During the encounter, four officials of the team were injured. Nandagudi police station inspector Subramanya, Nelamangala inspector S Prakash, Sarjapura sub-inspector Prakash and Manchenahalli sub-inspector Sundar received minor injuries during the gun fire. All four received first aid at a near by hospital and were later discharged. The police team consisted 17 cops including Hosakote sub-inspector Harish.

Seena’s body was first shifted to the Magadi government hospital for postmortem, but later the police decided to conduct the autopsy at the Rajarajeshwari Medical College Hospital in Bangalore. The body was then shifted in the evening. Police said that the autopsy will be conducted on Saturday morning.
