State BJP president KS Eshwarappa and leaders of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Sunday met at the organisation's headquarters in Dakshina Kannada district.

The meeting discussed future strategy, including the decision of whether to ‘keep or dump’ BS Yeddyurappa as Chief Minister, in the wake of the most recent controversy surrounding the Chief Minister.

The regional chief of the RSS, Da Ma Ravindra and several other senior leaders had a closed-door meeting with Eshwarappa and CT Ravi, BJP state general secretary.

There was, however, no official confirmation of what transpired.

“Only a few chosen leaders were invited. We know that the leaders had a round of talks about the current political turmoil, but we do not know if the leadership issue came up for discussion,” said a senior leader of the party.

CT Ravi, however, denied that the meeting discussed matters political.

“The RSS held the Guru Dakshina programme in Mangalore and Eshwarappa attended the function. He paid his respects to his mentors in the RSS. No political issue was discussed,” he said, berating Governor HR Bhardwaj for what he termed “creating a constitutional crisis by making irresponsible statements to the press”.

Eshwarappa, who is usually approachable and available to the media, wore a grumpy face on Sunday.

He nudged the media people aside and walked into the RSS headquarters. Even as he emerged, an hour later, he seemed determined to remain tight-lipped.

He also visited the BJP office in Mangalore. He remained evasive, and left in a hurry for the airport.

Speaking from Mumbai, national spokesperson for the RSS, Ram Madhav, said, “Change of leadership of the Karnataka government is purely a party affair. The RSS will not interfere. However, if BJP leaders consult the RSS, it will offer a candid opinion.”

Sources within the Mangalore RSS said that even if the leadership issue was not discussed at Mangalore, the matter had come up for discussion in Bangalore soon after the report of the Lok Ayukta was leaked to the media.

“Top RSS leaders of the state, including Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat from Mangalore, attended the meeting held with BJP leaders at Keshav Kripa (RSS state headquarters in Bangalore),” a source said.

Mangalore is an important centre for RSS, and the coastal town is also known as the organisation’s second headquarters, after Nagpur.

Even in matters of coordination between BJP and RSS, the Mangalore office is rather more active that the state headquarters of the organisation.
