CPI(M) leader and politburo member Sitaram Yechury has said that democracy cannot be strong until the marginalised sections of the society have the same rights as the privileged ones. At a public meeting organised by Tippu Sultan United Front State Committee at Infantry Hall here on Saturday Yechury assured that he would take up the problems faced by minorities in the Parliament.

Tippu Sultan United Front president Sardar Ahmed Quraishi, who presided over the function, raised various issues affecting the Muslim community. He said the recommendations made by Justice Ranganath Mishra Committee to give 10% of exclusive reservation to Muslims should be implemented.

He also raised other demands such as naming the Bangalore International Airport after Tippu Sultan and protecting his properties by bringing them under government custody and establishing two universities for minorities. A book by Quraishi titled Tippu Sultan – History of Lalbagh was released on the occasion. It highlights his contribution towards land reforms and establishment of Lalbagh and other gardens.
