Fifteen years back, the 38-acre Kaggadasapura Lake used to supply water to the entire CV Raman Nagar area. Today, residents living around the lake are facing water scarcity. They are also complaining about the reeking stench coming from garbage thrown in the lake. A tin factory also lets out chemical waste into the water body further polluting the lake.

No wonder, the lake is today a source of worry for the residents.
A survey conducted by the officials of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in 2009 said the water body was highly polluted.

"Due to the number of complaints received from the residents of Kaggadasapura, we have sent a letter to the commissioner. A notice has been sent to the tin factory. But so far, no action has been taken from their side," said M Krishnappa, the local councillor.

The Bangalore Development Authority has taken over the lake renovation project from the BBMP but the date of commencement of the work has not been decided yet.

The lake is covered with weed and sewage is disposed directly into the lake along with chemicals from a tin factory.
Matthew, a resident of Kaggadasapura, was angry when asked to react on the condition of Kaggadasapura Lake.

"Things were so different seven years back. But ever since the tin factory started disposing of its waste into the lake, the condition of this place has deteriorated. All the copper and steel materials in our house have turned black due to contamination of the air," he said.

In fact, Mathew wanted to sell off the house and move to a healthy environment but since the stink from the lake is so oppressive, nobody is interested in buying it.

"Since the air is also contaminated, we face health issues. People who have taken houses on rent in the locality, do not stay for more than six months. So far, nothing has been done by the BBMP officials to tackle these problems," Mathew said.

Once maintained by the Karnataka fishing department, the lake was taken over by BBMP in 2010. Even now, encroachment is rampant around the lake bed area. Government officials have paid several visits to the lake and given several promises to the residents. None of them have been fulfiled so far.

The lake is now more a dump yard than a water body. So no one wants to go fishing in the polluted lake. When there is a downpour, filth overflows to residential areas.

"The local residents' welfare association has decided to pool in money and do something about this. But with no aid from the government, we are not capable of doing anything," said another resident of CV Raman Nagar.

The condition of the lake is so bad that people living in and around the lake have given up all hopes. If rejuvenated properly with a park area, this lake can serve as a lung space for Bangaloreans.A BBMP survey in 2009 said the water body was highly polluted. The Bangalore Development Authority has taken over the lake renovation project, but the work is yet to commence.
