A young and bright footballer from a poor family had an untimely end while undergoing treatment at the HAL Hospital on Old Airport Road on Friday morning.

The relatives of deceased Arun Kumar, 24, alleged that medical negligence had led to his death. The deceased had been playing for the HAL football team for the past one year.

Kumar had fractured his shinbone on Tuesday while practicing football at the club’s stadium. He was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors discharged him after providing treatment. He was also prescribed some medicine. The footballer was normal till Thursday night, and had been regularly taking the prescribed medicines.

On Friday morning he complained of severe cold and his family members took him to the hospital.

“We took Arun to the hospital around 8.30 am as he had complained of severe cold. The doctors in the HAL hospital told us that he needed to be shifted to the ICU. Around 11 am, doctors come out of the ICU to tell us that Arun was no more,” said Shankar, his teammate and relative.

The doctors reportedly told the relatives that Kumar had died of cardiac arrest. But the relatives were not convinced.

“We suspect that the doctors had prescribed the wrong medicine,
resulting in the tragedy. He was hale and healthy except for the fracture,” Shankar added.

The HAL football team captain too suspected foul play. “We suspect something fishy. Arun was healthy,” skipper J Murali said.
“What is bothering us is that nobody from the club had expressed their concern over Arun’s death even after they got to know of the incident. They never showed any interest in players whenever they sustained injuries,” the captain added.

Murali said Kumar was a key player of the team, who wanted to play state-level tournaments next year.

Police said Kumar was unconscious, and had difficulty in breathing when he was brought to the hospital.
The Jeevanbimanagar police have registered a case and were investigating.

Kumar hailed from Kolar Gold Fields in Kolar district. He had lost his father at a young age and nurtured a dream to become an ace footballer. His mother and uncle Rajan, who himself was a footballer, struggled hard to help the boy fulfil his ambition.

Kumar lost his mother when he was a teenager. Rajan took him under his wings, and was totally devoted to grooming his nephew as an ace footballer.

Kumar had played for under-19 and under-21 teams of the state.
