No more worries of poor quality sand ruining your dream house, as the new sand policy will come into effect from April 1.

According to the new policy, filter sand will be completely banned. The move is aimed at crushing the filter sand mafia.

Once the ban comes into effect, middlemen will have to wind up their activities or face penal action. The new policy is framed on the lines of the existing one in Tamil Nadu — complete ban on filter sand.

Violators and illegal operators involved in sand mining and filter sand trade will be jailed and a hefty fine would be imposed. Cases will be booked under the Anti-Goonda Act against them. A government order with regard to implementation of the new policy has been issued by the mines and geology department.

The public works department (PWD) along with other departments will now take over the responsibility of selling sand for construction purposes. The policy also proposes to end sand mining in patta land. However, sand lifted from identified blocks can be stored in these lands. It is also proposed to install GPS/RFID equipment for vehicles supplying sand.

In addition to this, it has been mandatory for all these vehicles to be painted in yellow colour. The PWD will also set up check posts and install CCTVs at sand sale points to monitor the transportation of sand.

To meet the demand, the government has proposed to encourage sand manufacturing from granite.

No sand will be allowed to be lifted from agricultural land, as sand from these land tracts are found to be the cause for buildings collapsing while being constructed.

Special stickers with holograms would be affixed to lorries’ transporting sand and separate checkposts will be set up to check the quality of sand that is transported.

Meanwhile, Bangalore rural district commissioner has issued an order banning filter sand on Thursday.
