For a large number of Anna Hazare followers, who are unable to be part of the nation-wide protests actively, social networking sites are proving to be a boon.

Housewives, techies and students are posting their opinions on the Gandhian’s fight against corruption and the fury over his arrest on websites like Facebook, Twitter and Awaaz.

‘Support Anna Hazare against corruption’, a group on Facebook has over 3.48 lakh members. It states that “Corruption Indeed is Indian National Cancer (INC)”.

“It affects all of us in thousands of ways in every walk of life. India has to rise against it’s evils, and now, after 65 years, the time is yet again upon us, when we need collective action. Let us support a crusader, who, in the evening of his life, is fighting for our tomorrow!! Jai Hind (sic),” it says.

Prakash Kumar, a member of the group, says, “I am not against anybody. But I strongly support those against corruption or those who want to end corruption, not only in India, but worldwide.”

Echoing similar sentiments, another member Gunika Duggal said, “I’m with Anna Hazare. Manmohan Singh has to give an answer. If he does not, he should resign and then join the civil society. Anna has the right to protest according to the Constitution. I’m doing my bit; now it’s your turn.”

Gaurav Chawla, a student of Citizen High School, said, “When he (Hazare) can do it at this age, I can at least voice my opinions and encourage more people to be a part of it.”

On awaaz.org, supporters of Anna Hazare are filing a petition to prime minister Manmohan Singh. The petition states: “We call on you to immediately release Anna Hazare, and all of those arrested. We urge you to ensure the police uphold the constitutional right of all Indians to peacefully protest and demand an end to corruption. We stand with Anna Hazare in his urgent call for a Jan Lokpal. Free Anna and Free India of Corruption Now.”

A part of these petitions were delivered directly to Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday. The amount of petitions filed on the website has crossed 1.54 lakh. The website promises to aims to touch the 2,50,000 mark.

Avinash Reddy, a techie, said, “I have filed my petition on Awaaz.org. This site should be known to more people, as these petitions would be directly reaching the prime minister. It is a fight which would help end corruption.”
