It might come as a surprise, but the Centre seems to be keen on pushing through electoral reforms. If the statements of Union law minister Veerappa Moily are anything to go by, the existing ceiling on election expenses for various legislative bodies will soon be  pushed high.

The recommendation made by the National Commission to Review the Working of the Constitution, 2001, to enhance the ceiling on election expenses to Rs40 lakh for a Lok Sabha seat and Rs16 lakh for an assembly seat from Rs25 lakh and Rs10 lakh respectively at present, will be cleared within a week, said Moily while speaking at the Sixth Regional Consultation on Electoral Reforms at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) auditorium in Bangalore on Sunday.

He added that a comprehensive amendment to electoral reforms will be brought about in the next three to four months. The seventh and final consultation will be held at Guwahati, and the national review would be held in New Delhi on April 3 and 4. Moily  earlier said that consultations held in different parts of the country had thrown up two major issues–role of criminals in electoral politics and the funding of elections.

Moily said the UPA was determined to push through electoral reforms. “We are consulting select MPs before the national meeting and we will also convene a meeting of the leaders of main parties before or after the April meeting so that the reforms take place with minimum resistance. the minister said.

Chief election commissioner SY Quraishi said the commission would like to stop the media from carrying out opinion polls, ban motivated election advertisements in print media during the 48-hour respite from the end of public campaign to the election day.
