City police have said they will provide security at Metro stations only till 11pm and have requested the BMRCL to withdraw the 2am extension
‘Please cooperate with us because we would not be cooperating with you’. This is the police message to Namma Metro authorities. Citing security concerns, the police have requested Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) not to extend its service till 2am on January 1.
In view of the deluge of revellers expected to swarm MG Road , Brigade Road , Residency Road and St Mark’s Road to welcome the New Year, BMRCL had announced that Metro trains would ply till 2am on January 1.
However, additional commissioner of police (law and order), T Suneel Kumar, on Friday said the police would provide security at Metro stations only until 11pm and it is advisable that Metro ends its service at that time. He added that if BMRCL wants to extend its service beyond 11pm, it should make its own security arrangements.
Revellers and drunkards
Kumar said there is probability that under the influence of liquor, revellers may create a ruckus.
He said drunk people are not allowed in the Metro and when denied entry on this ground on New Year’s Eve, they may create a scene and may even damage property.
Moreover, Kumar said about 15,000 revellers will come to MG Road and there might be minor accidents in the rush to catch trains.
Owing to these reasons, the police have requested the BMRCL not to ply Metro trains after 11pm.
16,000 cops will be on duty
Further, the additional commissioner said the entire police force of the city—comprising more than 16,000 men, including traffic police and home guards—would be deployed on the night of December 31 to prevent any untoward incident.
He said everybody in the police force, right from the constable to commissioner, would be on duty on Saturday.
Also, 20 platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police and 15 platoons of City Armed Reserve would be deployed for security.
Kumar requested non-drinkers to get behind the wheels and drive home safely. He said traffic entry at many flyovers would be restricted at night to avoid accidents.
