While talks on integrating the urban transport is already happening at the surface level, Bangalore will see some of the transport modes integrating elements to help commuters take advantage of public transport.

Metro and the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) have already finalsied their Metro Bus Transit (MBT) pass which offers Bangaloreans the choice of using both Metro and BMTC buses as many times.

Although an MoU between BMTC and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) is yet to be signed in this regard, the two stakeholders are pressing ahead with the project.

BMTC has already printed a total of 10 lakh MBT passes, which will be available from the day Metro begins its commercial operations, which is likely in the first week of April. The MBT will have to be used with the contact-less smart card (CSC) which is available for Rs50 and valid for life.

What is the price of MBT?
The MBT pass comes with two rates: Rs70 and Rs110 denominations. The former can be used for travelling by Metro and ordinary non-air conditioned buses, while the latter can be used for Metro and air-conditioned buses.

What is unique about MBT?
The MBT pass comes with additional features. In terms of look and feel, the pass is broader than the regular daily pass, measuring 130 mm by 60 mm. It will have an image of a Metro train at the centre and the logos of both Namma Metro and BMTC on the top left and right corners, respectively.

There will also be a barcode on the right side of the picture. The MBT user will have to flash the barcode and the CSC, under a scanning machine at the Metro station. The MBT then becomes valid for bus rides, but not for Metro.

But the machine scans the code, after which the user can swipe the smart card and take as many Metro trips during the day, without any extra charge. The MBT is valid only for a day. The MBT needs to be duly signed by the user otherwise it is not valid and the person will be fined Rs500.

The BMTC has also increased the insurance coverage for the MBT pass denomination of Rs110 to up to Rslakh. The reimbursement for medical facilities due to accidents while on a BMTC bus is Rs50,000. The Rs70 MBT pass user will get an insurance coverage of up to Rs1 lakh and a reimbursement of Rs20,000 for medical treatments in and around Bangalore.

Where is the pass available?
The MBT passes will be available with conductors on all feeder buses. The end stations of Reach 1, Byappanahalli and MG Road will have corners within the stations where these passes will be sold. A few of the depots in proximity to the Metro stations or tracks will sell the MBT passes.

What is the share of BMTC and BMRCL in MBT?
The BMTC will share Rs35 in the MBT pass that is priced at Rs110 and the rest will go to BMRCL. The transfer of payments will be held every week by the two stakeholders.
