Earth Day was the perfect excuse for people to get their hands dirty—literally. Colour Hands and Brain Waves Academia organised an event that had people painting their feelings about the planet, in the city on Sunday.

Minister for urban development, law, parliamentary affairs and BWSSB, Suresh Kumar, took part in the event and spoke about the need for people to take up steps to preserve environment.

“We have always considered Earth as our mother and we have to realise that we have to take steps to save her because without her, there is no alternative for life. We need to start doing everything in our power to save our planet,” he said during the inauguration.

The day-long event saw the participation of more than 400 people from the city. All of them took to the canvass to express what they feel about Earth. The participants included acclaimed artist and cartoonist BG Gujjarppa, who drew a cartoon depicting two children holding Earth in their hands.

“This is the first time we are organising an Earth Day event. But pollution is a problem, especially in a place like Bangalore and we wanted to highlight the issues and bring forth the problems,” said Shoba Ravishankar, director of Brain Waves Academia.

“People can sometimes express through a paintbrush better than what they can express through words. And we had all ages participating in the event, from a two-year-old child to a 70-year-old man,” added Ravishankar.

To spread the word among people, the organisers also enlisted the help of some famous names.

“Apart from the cartoon by BG Gujjarppa, we also have artists like N Kanataraj and Shiela R sending their paintings, all of which revolve around the same theme,” added Ravishankar.
