Aimed at avoiding on-the-spot confrontation with offenders, the traffic police are planning to introduce 100% automated mode of imposing penalty within four years. With the implementation, only the vehicles of drink driving violators will be intercepted.

Elaborating on the plan, additional commission of police (traffic and security), M Abdulla Saleem said, "We are looking at booking visible cases of traffic violation like signal jumping, riding without helmet, rash and negligence driving, and others. It can be possible through the automated enforcement system."

The fully automated enforcement, the first such initiative in the country, would involve the constabulary noting down the numbers of offending vehicles and passing the information to the Automation Enforcement Centre.

Based on this, computerised challans would be generated and later sent by post to the offender's registered residential address. The offender can pay the fine at any traffic police station.

In the event of a fully automated enforcement system, the role of surveillance and enforcement cameras would be more prominent.

Such cameras keep an eye on motorists violating traffic rules. Interceptor vehicles' data will also be used to book cases against violators.

Saleem said the traffic police are currently booking 50% of traffic violation cases using the automated enforcement mode, especially by using surveillance cameras.

Due to the nature of the case, the present method of dealing with drink driving offenders will continue, said Saleem.

The traffic police will continue intercepting such offenders and decide on the spot whether a case needs to be filed against the violator.
