The JD(S) on Wednesday finalised an action plan to rejuvenate the party ahead of the the next assembly election by focusing on the youth.

Madhu Bangarappa, son of former chief minister Bangarappa, will now head the party’s youth wing. The decision was announced by JD(S) state president HD Kumaraswamy after meeting party leaders from 30 districts. Sandalwood star Pooja Gandhi joined the party at the meeting chaired by former prime minister HD Deve Gowda. She was welcomed by JD(S) state women’s president Jyoti Reddy, who handed over the party’s flag to Pooja.

Madhu Bangarappa will take charge as the youth wing president at a JD(S) youth rally in Uttara Kannada on January 28. Another rally will be organised in Bangalore before March 30 to energise the cadre, said Kumaraswamy. The issue of inducting Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Gowda into the party was also discussed. However, a decision has not been taken. Kumaraswamy said: “It is up to Nikhil to decide whether he wants join politics. Nobody is forcing him. I will welcome him if he decides to join the party.”

Pooja Gandhi said that she would not remain a showpiece in the party. “I am already working with an NGO to educate rural children. Now, I want to reach out to the public and joining a political party will enable me in this.” Pooja repeatedly stressed on her aims: ensuring good quality education for rural children and rehabilitating sex workers.

She cited Deve Gowda’s commitment for the welfare of farmers and programmes such as Kumaraswamy’s village stays as factors that inspired her to choose JD(S) for realising her political aspirations.

Pooja said she had no plans of quitting films and she would devote more time for social causes while continuing her innings in Sandalwood.
