A spate of accidents on BIA Road has forced the traffic police to take precautionary measures. Youths on a jolly ride towards the Bengaluru International Airport will now be faced with a check-post which will be set up to stop jolly riders during the night.

Of late, youths from the city, especially students, are hanging out in the airport on the pretext of having coffee. The night jolly rides have often resulted in fatal accidents.

“We have decided to take this matter seriously to avoid such accidents. We will set up a check-post near Trumpet flyover to stop the youths who are unnecessarily going to the airport in the night. Those on jolly ride will be sent back to the city,” said Panduranga H Rane, deputy commissioner of police (West).

An increased number of traffic policemen would be deployed at the check-post during weekends, said Rane.

A study carried out by the traffic police found that most of the students from the city used the BIA road for their jolly ride. Most of riders used the road in the night to visit Nandi Hills and Skandagiri and returned in the wee hours the same night. Some others used the road to enter the airport premises between 1 am and 2 am for coffee and returned between 4 am and 5 am. The fatal accidents took place between 1 am and 5 am.

The traffic police will also keep an eye on vehicles towards Nandi Hills and Skandagiri. “The bikes will be sent back if we find a group of friends going towards Nandi Hills. Drink and drive check will also be done throughout the night at the check-post. A case will be slapped on those who are found drunk driving,” said Rane.
