The city's shelterless people can soon sleep peacefully.

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), following the direction of the Supreme Court, is constructing night shelters for people who are sleeping near markets, bus stands, railway stations and other public places.

They will also get biometric identification card for availing government benefits like Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAJ), Yeshashwini card and voter card.

BBMP commissioner Siddaiah has directed the welfare department to form a ward or zonal-level committee to ensure that the benefits reach these hapless people.

The urban development wing has directed the BBMP commissioner to submit an action taken report before July-end and provide shelter to the people before October 31.

The Supreme Court directed the BBMP to construct shelters in areas with one lakh population.

The Palike should also provide drinking water, toilets, blankets, beds and locker facilities for all night shelters.

Separate shelters should be provided to women and old people. Apart from shelters, old people will get midday meal, skill development training, and regular health check-ups.

To fulfil these, the BBMP will work with NGOs.

According to a BBMP study, there are 2,858 people without shelters in the city's eight zones. This includes many women and children.

The commissioner has directed the zonal joint commissioners to identify suitable locations where night shelters can be put up either in tents or in community halls.

BBMP Deputy Commissioner (health and welfare) YM Ramachandramurthy said shelterless people had come to the city from afar to earn a living.

“Part of the fund will be provided by the central government. BBMP will construct houses for shelterless before the deadline in each ward,” he said.
