With a view to maintain cleanliness in the city and streamline the garbage disposal system, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to float fresh tenders within a week.
Contracts would be for clusters of three wards, for each tender.

It will cost the BBMP Rs350 crore. Though contracts for garbage clearance expired a year ago, it was continued due to a legal battle.

“Now that all the hurdles have been cleared, we would float fresh tenders once a decision is taken in the BBMP council on Tuesday,” said city in-charge and home minister R Ashoka.

“Earlier when we had only 100 wards, we used to spend Rs100 crore. Now, for 198 wards, we are spending Rs350 crore. That includes collection, segregation and transportation of garbage.

There is a big lobby behind this. We will not allow lobbies to gain an upper hand this time. That is why we have divided the wards into clusters, with  three wards in each tender,” he added.

Hoardings to yield more

In an effort to tap additional revenue, BBMP is mulling over levying tax on the private advertisement hoardings, put up on residential buildings or complexes.

Speaking to the media, R Ashoka, minister for home and transport, said, “On Tuesday, the BBMP council meeting will make a final decision in this regard. Currently, through advertisement hoardings, the BBMP is making only Rs40 crore. There are several loopholes in our policy. The new advertisement policy will have stringent norms for putting up hoardings. The new policy is expected to bring in Rs150 crore of additional revenue for BBMP,” he added.

The advertisement hoardings put on residential complexes by private people will also be taxed.

“Now onwards, we will not give advertisement hoardings on contract basis. We will auction the space for a specific period,” he said.

“All advertisement hoarding contracts will come to an end by June 31, after which, we will auction division-wise,” Ashoka said.
He also said that advertisements found on trees will be taxed.

Cash, not machine

The BBMP has decided to issue cash instead of sewing machines to more than 20,000 poor women who undergo tailoring training classes.

For the past four years, the BBMP has not distributed sewing machines to those who completed the one-year training programme. Earlier, it had decided to distribute machines, but now it intends to distribute Rs3,000 cash to each beneficiary.

A final decision in this matter will also be taken in the BBMP council meeting to be held on Tuesday.
