The National Cadet Corps (NCC), which has a reputation of sending a sizeable number of its cadets to prestigious military institutions like the Indian Military Academy and the National Defence Academy, is falling short of imparting advanced training to its cadets in the state.

The reason for this is neither obsolete training methods nor lack of motivation amongst cadets, but the state government’s delay in providing a small plot of land in Bangalore to the NCC Directorate of Karnataka and Goa.

Unlike other states, the Directorate of Karnataka and Goa is yet to allot land for setting up the NCC Nagar.

The NCC Nagar is an integrated NCC facility where  cadets will be imparted advanced training. Besides, it will house offices, residential accommodations of officers and men, hostel for cadets in a three or four acre plot.

These nagars are usually located in state headquarters. However, for the Directorate of Karnataka and Goa the dream of having such a facility in the city has not been realised, despite repeated demands to state and central governments.

“Due to the absence of NCC Nagars, we are definitely compromising on the quality of training. In order to impart advanced training, it is important for us to have land for conducting obstacle courses and for building a firing range,” said Air Commodore Ravi Dhar, deputy director general, Karnataka and Goa Directorate. He added that NCC Nagars should be situated within city limits so that they are easily accessible to the cadets and for administrative reasons

“The state government has kept our request pending because of the non-availability of land in the city area. We had sought military land in the city, but they too seem to be out of bounds,” he added.

The Military Farm in Hebbal was initially shortlisted for NCC Nagar, but it has now been allotted for a residential complex for army officers. In Karnataka, there are 75,000 NCC cadets now, and the directorate will be adding 20,000 cadets in the next four years.
