With leaked roofs and cracked walls staring at them, over 50 families in Metro Layout, located near Sunkadakatte along Magadi Road, are living in a perilous condition.
These houses are not old or dilapidated, but built eight months ago by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) as a rehabilitation package for the families who lost their houses for the Namma Metro project along Magadi Road and other areas. The layout has a total of 260 houses, of which about 50 have been occupied.
Residents started observing cracks in the buildings two months ago. “Initially, we thought it is in a few buildings, but now almost all the buildings have more than 10 to 15 cracks on the wall. During the rain, the water leaks inside the house,” said Ramesh, a resident.
“Last time, heavy rains left us awake the whole night. Rainwater seeped out the cracked ceiling throughout the night,” said Ramesh, who took the initiative to apprise the BMRCL officers of the problems faced in the layout.
The residents approached BMRCL officials at Shantinagar for help. “The officials inspected the buildings and said it was just an hair crack. After several requests to concrete the gaps, they sent two workers to do the repair work. The building can collapse anytime as cracks are becoming wider by the day,” said Ramesh.
Residents believe complete re-plastering is the only solution as the patch work will not stay for a long time.
Residents of the layout are also unhappy with the location. “The layout is quite far from the main road. It has no water supply, no streetlights and no bus facility or shops. It is very difficult for women to venture out in the evening,” said Jamuna, a resident.
