The controversy surrounding the Ajay Devgn starrer Singham took another turn on Saturday with the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) taking up the issue. KFCC president Basant Kumar Patil took strong objections to the dialogue in the movie that allegedly portrays Kannadigas in poor light.

“We extend support to pro-Kannada organisations who are protesting against the movie. We from the KFFC have set a deadline till Monday for the movie distributors to edit out the controversial dialogue from the movie, effective in all states where it is being screened. In this regard, we have also contacted the film chambers in other states,” said Patil.

In the meantime, Singham’s distributors have written to the KFCC apologising for the controversial dialogue.

S Narasimhan of the Reliance ADA Groups and Reliance Big Entertainment Company, who have taken the rights of distribution of Singham in the state, said:

“There was no intention to offend Kannadigas. We have removed the controversial dialogue from the movie in the state,” he said.

However, protests against the movie continued in many parts of the state, with Kannada activists from Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha raising slogans against the movie-makers.

“I demand the KFCC to register its protest with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). We should raise our voice against the degradation of the language on the land and its people,” said Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha leader Vatal Nagaraj.

Some theatres such as Tribhuvan in Bangalore, where the movie is being screened, were give police protection to avoid untoward incidents.

The Hindi film, a remake of a Tamil movie by the same name starring Suriya, released across the country on Friday. It allegedly features derogatory remarks against Kannada-speaking people. Singham is directed by Rohit Shetty.
