The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has awarded 509 drivers for their accident-free service. The drivers received a gold medal and Rs5,000 in cash for their commendable job.
Chief minister BS Yeddyurappa , transport minister R Ashoka, mayor SK Nataraj, Shantinagar MLA NA Harris and other officers of KSRTC gave away the awards on Thursday.
“They have not only saved lives, but also proved their commitment to the corporation. They are the real sons of the soil. We have to ensure that they get their due respect, dignity and facilities in life such that they can ensure better future for their children,” said Yeddyurappa of the drivers and announced scholarships for their wards, and medical assistance for their families.
He appreciated Ashoka for developing the sector and improving its workforce.
“There have been incidents when a driver got a heart attack while driving, but parked the bus on a footpath and not crash it somewhere to save lives. Our drivers are trained well and understand their responsibility well,” said Ashoka.
The transport minister said that people fail to recognise such drivers who provide accident-free service to the people of the state.
Ashoka announced many welfare schemes for KSRTC employees. Training allowance has been raised from Rs1,000 to Rs1,400. The same is Rs600 and Rs900 for the first and second years, respectively. Extended medical facility has been announced for trainee drivers and officers.
The wife of N Gokulran, late former managing director of KSRTC, was felicitated on the occasion. “Gokulram brought the turning point of development in the corporation and showed ways to develop it further,” said Ashoka.
