Mayhem after Bangalore corporator Diwan Ali’s murder

Yarabnagar remained tense on Sunday afternoon following the murder of rowdy-turned-corporator Diwan Ali, aged 37.

Shops and other commercial establishments in Yarabnagar and Banashankari II Stage downed shutters, and three battalions of the City Armed Reserve and Karnataka State Reserve Police were rushed to the locality.

The police personnel were camping in the area.

Several hundreds of people descended on the area as the news of the fatal attack spread.

Police were on high alert at Siddapur and Chamarajpet, besides Yarabnagar. Mahim, the rival gangster suspected to have contracted killers to eliminate Ali, hailed from Siddapur.

Soon after the attack on Ali around 12.30 pm, onlookers rushed the corporator, who had 36 cases against him and his injured associates to the nearby Sevakshetra Hospital.

A mob gathered at the hospital damaged the reception area, when the doctors there referred Ali to Sagar Hospital. The corporator died while being shifted to Sagar. Ali’s two associates, who were injured in the attack, too were taken there. Hospital sources said they were out of danger.

Several supporters of Ali gathered at Sagar Hospital, creating tense moments at the spot.

One of the associates, Khalim lost his left thumb in the attack, besides suffering multiple injuries on his body.

Mujeeb, a childhood friend of Ali, claimed he had spoken to the slain corporator around 11 am on Sunday. He heard about the attack while he was bathing.

“He was involved in some minor criminal activities which made him a rowdy. But he was very helpful to the needy.

He returned to his renovated house just a month ago. He was earlier staying at Konanakunte before coming here,” Mujeeb said.

Corporator Padmanabha Reddy, JD(S) MLA Zameer Ahmed, Tanveer, a criminal who claimed that he had reformed and hundreds of supporters of Ali gathered at KIMS hospital where a post-mortem examination was conducted.
Ali’s body was kept at his house till late Sunday night. Several people visited his house to pay their last respects.

The slain corporator was cremated at the Wilson Garden electric crematorium at 10 pm.

Police said more than 14 criminals were the part of Ali’s gang. Officers said the gangsters were under watch to prevent a possible retaliatory strike on Mahim’s gang.
