Be ready for the summer heat as temperature may soar to 37 degree Celsius in the coming days. The minimum temperatures will also rise.

On Tuesday, the city recorded a maximum of 34 degree Celsius and a minimum of 18.6 degree Celsius. The minimum temperature was near normal (normal being 19 degree Celsius). The maximum rose by two degree above normal, the normal being 32 degree Celsius.

Speaking to DNA, Indian Meteorological Department, Bangalore, director B Puttanna said, “We are expecting the temperatures to rise up to 36 degree to 37 degree Celsius in the coming days. There are also chances of heat wave to occur occasionally, though it is not possible as Bangalore is located at a higher altitude. (A heat wave occurs when the temperature rises to 37 degree or 38 degree Celsius.’’

The city had experienced a maximum of 37.3 degree Celsius on March 29, 1996. A maximum of 35.9 was recorded on March 26, 2007 and 35.7 degree Celsius was recorded on March 24, 2010 and on March 20, 2002.

Explaining why people are feeling the prickly heat, Puttanna said it was because the weather was dry and the humidity was less (about 10% to 15%). Since there is no moisture in the air, citizens are feeling the prickly heat. He pointed that the temperatures would further rise and there are no chances of rainfall in the near future to bring some respite, unless there is a change in the wind pattern. At the most, clouding may occur.

Rapid rise in temperature and prickly heat is also due to factors such as rapid concretisation, urbanisation and felling of trees. While the rise in day temperatures will not make much of a difference, rise in minimum temperatures is a matter of concern and this can soar up to 20 degree to 21 degree Celsius.
