Refused drinks after deadline, the associate of a councillor stabbed a bar owner and fled the scene.

Police have arrested Shakeel Ahmed, Congress councillor of Bharathinagar ward, and his four associates for attempt to murder Nayeem.

The incident happened at Lais Bar on Church Street around 11.20pm on Tuesday.

Ahmed, a resident of Shivajinagar, and four of his associates walked into the bar around closing time at 11.20pm and ordered the bartenders to serve them liquor. The bartenders refused saying they strictly follow the police orders to stop serving liquor at 11.30pm.

Ahmed felt insulted and told them angrily that they could not ignore the words of a BBMP councillor. When the bar employees remained adamant, he and his associates started a verbal duel with them.

Sensing trouble, bar owner Nayeem came to the rescue of his employees and told the visitors about the rules. This only infuriated them. As the bartenders stood helpless, Salman, one of Ahmed’s aides, pulled out a knife, stabbed Nayeem in his right arm and fled the scene.

The bartenders informed the police and Nayeem was taken to Mallya Hospital where he is said to be out of danger.

The Cubbon Park arrested the five-member gang. A case was registered under the provisions of section 307 (attempt to murder), section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), section 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and section 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code. Besides Ahmed, the police identified the four others arrested as Isan, Khajal, Salman and Fairoz.

During the fight, the accused persons  damaged  furniture in the bar. “Councillor Ahmed has been arrested by the Cubbon Park police for assaulting the bar owner who refused to serve him liquor beyond the stipulated time,” additional commissioner of police (law and order) T Sunil Kumar said on Wednesday.

“We have arrested the five persons, including the councillor, and we will produce them before the court late on Wednesday,” an investigation officer said. Deputy commissioner of police (central) G Ramesh said the accused councillor was allegedly involved in two murder cases, one kidnap case and other cases of assault. Salman, who stabbed Nayeem in his arm, was involved in two kidnap cases and one robbery case.
