The police rescued a 25-year-old woman, who was allegedly detained inside her house for the past seven months, in Pipeline Road in Malleswaram, on Wednesday.

The husband, Chandrasekhar, 32, who also harassed the woman, has been arrested. The woman, identified as Usha, was rescued after a women’s organisation informed Vyalikaval police about the incident.

Police said Chandrasekhar, a native of Hebri in Udupi district, came to the city 16 years ago and was running a pan shop in front of Hotel Sudarshan near Central theatre. He married Usha seven years ago and the couple lived together in the city for three years.
Chandrasekhar then sent Usha and their two children, Vignesh and Poornesh, to his native village. He used to visit Hebri once a month.

In the meantime, Chandrasekhar came in contact with another woman with whom he started living in his house. Bowing to parental pressure, Chandrasekhar brought Usha to the city seven months ago, but did not allow her to venture out of the house. The other woman was asked to relocate.

He told police that Usha was mentally imbalanced and used to disrobe herself in public, forcing him to lock her inside the house.
Usha was found half-naked when rescued by the police. The woman refuted Chandrasekhar’s version and told the police that she was scantily-dressed as the room she was locked in was hot.

Police accepted Usha’s statement, but did not rule out the possibility that she might be mentally imbalanced as she was locked up inside the house for seven months.
