Residents of Malleswaram and surrounding areas took out a peaceful protest march on Sunday against road widening and tree cutting by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)on the occasion of the World Environment Day.

The marchers also protested against Mantri Square mall which continued to create traffic bottlenecks despite the recent demolition drive.

The residents voiced their anger against the BBMP plan to widen Sampige Road and Sankey Road. "This may involve destroying portions of the 54-year-old Stella Maris School, the tank bund, and several trees along Sankey Road," said one of the protesters.
They were upset that the BBMP did not bother to seek their opinion before making such a decision.

"We demand that the civic authorities must not proceed with any of the road-widening plans. They should have public consultations on these issues," shouted the protesters.

They demanded answers from the BBMP for permitting the construction of Mantri mall in the first place and then allowing it to occupy that place despite traffic problems created by the ramp. It is difficult for pedestrians to cross Sankey and Sampige roads. Once they are widened, it will only add to their woes, the protesters said.

Media reports indicate that 36 trees may be cut on Sampige Road. "Meanwhile, Mantri is going ahead with its plan to construct two new buildings, one with 51 floors and another with 37 floors along with facility to park 2,500 cars. How can such constructions be allowed by the authorities," a protester asked.

"When these multi-storey buildings are constructed despite public outcry, how will road-widening help in reducing traffic congestion," he added.
